Neural connection Hair cell

neurons of auditory or vestibulocochlear nerve (the eighth cranial nerve) innervate cochlear , vestibular hair cells. neurotransmitter released hair cells stimulates terminal neurites of peripheral axons of afferent (towards brain) neurons thought glutamate. @ presynaptic juncture, there distinct presynaptic dense body or ribbon. dense body surrounded synaptic vesicles , thought aid in fast release of neurotransmitter.

nerve fiber innervation denser inner hair cells outer hair cells. single inner hair cell innervated numerous nerve fibers, whereas single nerve fiber innervates many outer hair cells. inner hair cell nerve fibers heavily myelinated, in contrast unmyelinated outer hair cell nerve fibers. region of basilar membrane supplying inputs particular afferent nerve fibre can considered receptive field.

efferent projections brain cochlea play role in perception of sound. efferent synapses occur on outer hair cells , on afferent axons under inner hair cells. presynaptic terminal bouton filled vesicles containing acetylcholine , neuropeptide called calcitonin gene-related peptide. effects of these compounds vary, in hair cells acetylcholine hyperpolarized cell, reduces sensitivity of cochlea locally.
