in 1950s, prime minister robert menzies established plan develop canberra , construct other important national buildings. 1959 plan featured new building high court on shore of lake burley griffin, next location new parliament house , national library of australia. plan abandoned in 1968 , location of parliament moved, later settling on present site on capital hill.
in march 1968, government announced court move canberra. in 1972 international competition held attracting 158 entries. in 1973 firm of edwards madigan torzillo briggs declared winner of two-stage competition. architect chris kringas principal designer , director in charge working feiko bouman. in march 1975, 1 month before construction began, kringas died, aged 38. following death, feiko bouman, hans marelli , colin madigan supervised construction of design. constructed building largely identical 1973 competition design.

construction began in april 1975 on shore of lake burley griffin, in parliamentary triangle. site east of axis running between capital hill , australian war memorial. high court building houses 3 courtrooms, justices chambers, , court s main registry, library, , corporate services facilities. unusual , distinctive structure, built in brutalist style, , features immense public atrium 24-metre-high roof. neighbouring national gallery designed firm of edwards madigan torzillo , briggs. there similarities between 2 buildings in material , style significant differences in architectural form , spatial concept. building completed in 1980 , majority of court s sittings have been held in canberra since then.
the high court , national gallery precinct added australian national heritage list in november 2007.
