desert storm

in short six-month period during 1990 , 1991, 1st battalion, 37th armor, alerted deployment operation desert shield/desert storm, deployed of personnel , equipment on 3,000 miles (4,800 km) forward deployed location, fought major battle against equipped enemy on terrain had never trained on , redeployed unit home station.


the 1st battalion 37th armor (1st armored division) rose barracks, vilseck, germany, commanded ltc edward l. dyer, alerted deployment persian gulf on 8 november 1990. 1–37 armor first brigade unit vilseck deploy. 1–37 armor attached 3rd bulldog brigade warner barracks in bamberg, germany, under former commander, colonel daniel zannini. small advance party deployed on 14 december , main body began departing on 26 december. 30 december, battalion had arrived in saudi arabia. vehicles , equipment had been shipped ports in europe began arrive on 4 january , 12 january equipment had arrived. when hostilities commenced on 15 january 1991, battalion in process of closing last elements taa thompson. next month spent task organizing, training, rehearsing, , preparing ground war.


on 24 february, task force 1–37 crossed line of departure part of vii corps attack against iraqi forces. on 25 february, battalion attacked , seized division headquarters of iraqi 26th infantry division destroying 4 armored vehicles, 8 air defense weapons , captured on forty enemy prisoners of war (epw). after attacking day on 26 february, tf 1–37, part of 3rd brigade, 1st armored division, made contact brigade of tawakalna armored division of republican guard forces command (rgfc) had established defensive position protect flank of rgfc , facilitate escape kuwait. after thirty-minute fire fight, tf 1–37 ordered assault enemy position. assault, conducted @ night, in driving rain, resulted in destruction of twenty-six t-72 tanks, 47 armored personnel carriers (mostly bmp s) , handful of other vehicles, capture of on 1 hundred epws. tf 1–37 suffered loss of 4 m1a1 tanks destroyed , 6 personnel wounded in action. after consolidation , reorganization, task force continued attack throughout night of 26–27 february, reestablishing contact rgfc @ approximately 0530, 27 february. task force continued attack, fighting numerous engagements elements of multiple iraqi divisions throughout 27th , morning of 28 february. @ 0800 local time, 28 february, task force established hasty defensive position astride iraq-kuwait border. during last 28 hours of attack, tf 1–37 destroyed additional thirty-one tanks, thirty-one bmps, numerous other apcs, air defense weapons , trucks, , captured on 200 epws.


four days after cease fire, tf 1–37 moved 9 miles (14 km) further kuwait. 2 missions conducted destroy additional enemy weapons, ammunition , equipment, bury enemy remains, , recover 4 m1a1 s had been destroyed on 26 february.


on 24 march, tf 1–37 moved iraq , established defensive position in vicinity of rumayilah oil fields. next 3 weeks, task force missions centered on refugee assistance , security operations. on 10 april, tf 1–37 began movement rear assembly area (raa) in vicinity of king khalid military city (kkmc), saudi arabia. 13 april, task force had closed raa , preparations began redeployment of unit germany.


on 16 august 1991 1st brigade, 1st armored division redesignated 3d brigade, 3d infantry division.

global war on terror

on 10 may 2003, 1-37 armor battalion left ray barracks in friedberg, germany , deployed iraq. upon arrival in baghdad in june, 1st battalion established forward operating base (fob) on baghdad island, small peninsula on tigris river, , formerly recreational resort , amusement park elite of saddam hussein s regime. on course of next eleven months, soldiers of 1st battalion conducted thousands of area security patrols, , several hundred operations ranging in size few dozen men enormous brigade level operation on christmas eve, 2003 involved on 1000 soldiers 1st brigade of 1st armored division conducting cordon , search operation of large neighborhood in north central baghdad.


upon receiving orders 90-day extension of one-year deployment in april 2004, 1st battalion moved 45 miles (72 km) south of baghdad ancient city of karbala, had fallen control of members of mahdi army, followers of radical shi ite cleric muqtada al-sadr. after several days of shaping operations, battalion captured abandoned hotel in center of city , began using strong point conduct operations. on next ten days, battalion engaged in of intense urban warfare experienced single unit of army since world war ii. after driving remnants of mahdi army karbala, bn engaged in several weeks of civil-military operations before returning baghdad prepare trip home germany. 1st battalion, 37th armored awarded second presidential unit citation actions in karbala.


the battalion deployed again in support of operation iraq freedom in end of 2005 , returned germany in beginning of 2007. during deployment battalion saw direct combat in ninewa province of northern iraq followed combat operations in al anbar province, include battle of ramadi, in awarded navy unit citation pivotal role in retaking of city of ramadi massive , violent force of armed , organized extremists.


the battalion deactivated in april 2007. on 27 october 2008, 1st bn, 37th armored re-activated @ fort bliss, texas part of 1ad s redeployment continental united states (conus). 1–37 armor deployed once again iraq in november 2009. 1st brigade, 1st armored division converted stryker brigade, 1–37 armor deactivated on 11 january 2011. on 18 june 2015, 1-37 armor reactivated @ fort bliss, texas part of 2nd brigade, 1ad.


2nd battalion

the 2nd battalion, 37th armored regiment, known iron dukes, or dukes, forward deployed tank battalion located in federal republic of germany. unit nestled in rolling hills of german state of hessen, in city of friedberg. occupied ray barracks along 1st battalion, 36th infantry regiment; 501st forward support battalion; headquarters, 1st brigade; , sister battalion; 1st battalion, 37th armored regiment. member of ready first combat team, 1 of many units make 1st armored division. in may 2003, dukes deployed ray barracks central baghdad, iraq, 15-month mission in support of operation iraqi freedom. february 2007, iron dukes had returned second tour in iraq, during served in city of tel afar, , later ar ramadi. 2nd battalion, 37th armored regiment deactivated on april 2007.

3rd battalion
history

the 3rd battalion, 37th armored regiment saw combat in persian gulf war 24 february 1991 through 4 march 1991 organized task force 3/37th armor, unit composed of hhc, b, , c companies, 3/37th armor; , d company, second battalion, sixteenth infantry; first platoon of b company , second platoon of c company, second battalion, third air defense artillery; c company, first engineer battalion; , ground surveillance radar team b, 1 hundred , first military intelligence battalion. part of 2nd brigade of 1st infantry division , vii corps main effort, task force 3/37th armor breached iraqi defense on 24 february 1991, clearing 4 passage lanes , expanding gap under direct enemy fire. task force attacked 300 kilometers across southern iraq northern kuwait, severing iraqi lines of communication, , drove north once again iraq assist in seizure of city of safwan, iraq, , securing of safwan airfield; scout platoon (hhc,3/37 ar) part of guard force under command of 1lt craig borchelt coalition forces-iraqi cease-fire negotiations. during operation, on fifty enemy combat vehicles destroyed , on 1700 prisoners captured. throughout ground war, soldiers performed marked distinction under difficult , hazardous conditions. gallantry, determination, , esprit de corps guaranteed victory , maintained finest traditions of united states army.


after gulf war, dauntless battalion continued serve @ fort riley part of 2nd brigade combat team (dagger), 1st infantry division 1991-1996. in march 1996, lieutenant colonel ronald g. houle , command sergeant major craig salminen cased battalion s colors unit re-designated 1st battalion, 13th armored regiment part of 1st infantry division s move germany (2/1 id reflagged 3rd brigade combat team, 1st armored division). although 3-37ar s service on custer hill @ riley came end- former soldiers still proudly maintain memory , pay tribute rich heritage u.s. army armored unit. courage conquers- no slack!
