one of local pubs, crown inn, has been known under name since 1850s , there has been inn @ site since late 18th century. other pub, kings arms, built in 1767 coaching inn john pratt, local had made fortune jockey. pratt racehorse breeder , master of askrigg harriers during 18th century. kept hunters , pack of hounds in yard behind house built on askrigg s main street in 1767. kennels , stabling date late 18th or 19th century. kennels had semi-circular enclosure attached , long row of stabling lay beyond. pratt s hunters ridden in , out of land through robinson s gateways on main street. site has been developed provide holiday accommodation.
the village once had railway station part of hawes branch of north eastern railway opening in 1878 closure in april 1954. wensleydale railway association has plans rebuild railway northallerton (from current western terminus @ redmire) garsdale including re-opening of station in village. done in period between 2010 – 2014.
