new zealand had overall length of 590 feet (179.8 m), beam of 80 feet (24.4 m), , draught of 29 feet 9 inches (9.1 m) @ deep load. displaced 18,500 long tons (18,800 t) @ load , 22,130 long tons (22,490 t) @ deep load. battlecruiser s parsons direct-drive steam turbines designed produce 44,000 shaft horsepower (33,000 kw), propelling ship @ 25 knots (46 km/h; 29 mph). however, during trials in 1912, turbines produced on 49,000 shp (37,000 kw), allowed new zealand reach 26.39 knots (48.87 km/h; 30.37 mph). ship carried approximately 3,200 long tons (3,300 t) of coal, , additional 850 long tons (860 t) of fuel oil; sprayed on coal increase burn rate. gave range of 6,690 nautical miles (12,390 km; 7,700 mi) @ speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph).

the ship carried 8 bl 12-inch mk x guns in 4 twin gun turrets. 2 turrets mounted fore , aft on centreline, identified , x respectively. other 2 wing turrets mounted amidships , staggered diagonally: p forward , port of centre funnel, while q situated starboard , aft. each wing turret had limited ability fire opposite side, if ship full broadside target bring 8 main guns bear. secondary armament consisted of sixteen 4-inch bl mk vii guns positioned in superstructure. mounted 2 18-inch submerged torpedo tubes, 1 on each side aft of x barbette, , twelve torpedoes carried.


new zealand s turret fitted 9-foot (2.7 m) rangefinder @ rear of turret roof. equipped control entire main armament in event normal fire control positions knocked out or communication between primary positions , gun layers disabled.


wartime modifications

the ship fitted single qf 6 pounder hotchkiss anti-aircraft (aa) gun october 1914 end of 1915. in march 1915, single qf 3 inch 20 cwt aa gun added. provided 500 rounds. battlecruiser s 4-inch guns enclosed in casemates , given blast shields during refit in november better protect gun crews weather , enemy action. 2 aft guns removed @ same time.


new zealand received fire-control director sometime between mid-1915 , may 1916; centralised fire control under director officer, fired guns. turret crewmen merely had follow pointers transmitted director align guns on target. increased accuracy, easier spot fall of shells , eliminated problem of ship s roll dispersing shells when each turret fired independently. additional inch of armour added top of magazines , turret roofs after battle of jutland.


by 1918, new zealand carried 2 aircraft, sopwith pup , sopwith 1½ strutter, on flying-off ramps fitted on top of p , q turrets. pup intended shoot down zeppelins while 1½ strutter used spotting , reconnaissance. each platform had canvas hangar protect aircraft during inclement weather.
