the castilian pattern widespread pattern in spain. designed , published heraclio fournier in 1889 , 20th century had displaced older patterns in spain. despite being called castilian, cards first produced in fournier s headquarters in vitoria-gasteiz, capital of basque country. fournier made noticeable innovations spanish cards such giving kings beards, adding faces coins, dagger-like swords, , red cups. figures wear fantastic pseudo-medieval costumes. decks come in packs of 40 or 50 cards.


the mexican pattern derived castilian in 1923 clemente jacques. knights wear wide brim hats notable feature conversion of knaves females. come in decks of 40 cards 50 card decks once produced.
