the woods theatre built theatrical producer albert h. woods. had opened eltinge theatre in new york city host broadway productions, , wanted similar venue in chicago road companies. woods opened on march 11, 1918, production of friendly enemies. designed in neo-gothic style firm marshall , fox, designed such still-extant chicago structures blackstone theatre (later renamed merle reskin theatre) , drake hotel. ten-story building included theater @ ground level , offices above.
movie theater
the woods converted show movies in 1932. later became flagship venue essaness theatres, moved headquarters building. starting in 1950s, building featured unusually large marquee facing dearborn street. facade , marquee can seen in parade scene of 1986 film ferris bueller s day off.

in later years quality of venue declined. in 1982, management had pay medical treatments when patron bitten rat during show. 1988, woods had become last of chicago loop movie houses. closed on january 8, 1989. last movie shown hellbound: hellraiser ii.
demolition
after being considered entry in national register of historic places, demolished in 1990. demolition part of controversial urban renewal project. beginning demolition of garrick theatre on randolph, many of chicago s classic theaters demolished either because of disuse or disrepair. woods located on parcel directly northwest of controversial block 37, once housed roosevelt , united artists theaters. site of mcvickers theatre occupied goodman theatre center. block 37 across street on site of woods theatre. sat vacant more fifteen years.
