April Tornadoes of 2013



there 83 tornadoes reported in u.s. in april, of @ least 80 have been confirmed.


april 7–11

as powerful trough moved rocky mountains, return flow gulf of mexico provided ample moisture development of severe thunderstorms. resulted in moderate multi-day tornado outbreak produced 28 tornadoes. brief rope tornado reported on april 7, near paradise, kansas, no damage reported. following day, several tornadoes reported in colorado, kansas, , nebraska. first tornado (rated ef0) touched down in kit carson county, colorado, causing no damage. second tornado (rated ef1) touched down shortly before 0300 utc in nebraska, causing substantial damage farm , feed yard. cars , trucks flipped off of highways, power poles , trees snapped, , many buildings damaged. no tornadoes observed following day, april 9, due inversion aloft, many reports of large hail received iowa texas.


as system pushed eastward across missouri , arkansas, , warm front drifted northward, severe thunderstorms broke out along both boundaries. several storms in association squall line caused damaging winds. evening, damaging ef2 tornado touched down in st. louis suburb of hazelwood, missouri, tearing roofs off of several homes , apartment buildings, downing numerous trees , power lines, , flipping many cars. ef2 tornado touched down in van buren county, arkansas, prompting tornado emergency. significant damage reported near scotland, including many vehicles thrown off road , many homes , other buildings being destroyed. supercell spawned scotland area tornado produced damaging ef2 near mt. olive well. on april 11, supercell ahead of squall line developed in eastern mississippi. large wedge tornado touched down in kemper county , moved noxubee county , pickens county, alabama. tornado rated ef3 , on ground 68.4 miles (110.1 km). several homes, metal tower structure, , steel-frame building destroyed tornado. 1 person killed , 5 injured in kemper county , 4 people injured in noxubee county. total of 7 counties in mississippi reported damage. mississippi governor phil bryant declared state of emergency kemper , noxubee counties due impacts of tornado. later evening, ef2 tornado passed west of notasulga, alabama , heavily damaged several homes , mobile homes. 1 mobile home destroyed, , well-built house received major damage outer wall , lost entire roof. trees , headstones knocked over, , 1 person injured flying glass. other weaker tornadoes confirmed across parts of louisiana, alabama, , georgia before outbreak came end.


april 17–19

on april 17, powerful upper-level low pressure system , associated warm front developed across central united states. storm prediction center issued moderate risk of severe weather of central oklahoma, including 15% hatched risk of tornadoes, of predicted strong. several supercell thunderstorms developed evening , rapidly became severe. multiple tornadoes touched down across risk area evening , overnight, though weak , relatively brief. few weak tornadoes touched down in texas , missouri.


tornadoes continued touching down morning of 18th, including ef2 caused considerable damage near zena, oklahoma. other weak tornadoes occurred later afternoon in arkansas, mississippi, , louisiana. system caused 1 tornado touch down near shelburne, ontario (rated environment canada ef1, canada s first tornado rated such ratings transitioned enhanced fujita scale).


isolated tornado activity continued on 19th, several touchdowns occurring across eastern united states. 5 tornadoes confirmed, including ef2 caused severe damage in town of mansfield, georgia.
