1 applications
1.1 breast
1.2 musculoskeletal imaging
1.2.1 evaluation of fractures
1.2.2 evaluation of erosions in rheumatoid arthritis
applications
breast
tomosynthesis food , drug administration (fda) approved use in breast cancer screening. of 2016 unclear if use in screening normal risk women beneficial or harmful.
digital breast tomosynthesis (dbt) can provide higher diagnostic accuracy compared conventional mammography. in dbt, conventional mammography, compression used improve image quality , decreases radiation dose. laminographic imaging technique dates 1930s , belongs category of geometric or linear tomography.
because data acquired 85 - 160 micron typical resolution, higher ct, dbt unable offer narrow slice widths ct offers (typically 1-1.5 mm). however, higher resolution detectors permit high in-plane resolution, if z-axis resolution less. primary interest in dbt in breast imaging, extension mammography, offers better detection rates little increase in radiation.
musculoskeletal imaging
tomosynthesis has more limited depth of field ct. reason, not able replace ct evaluation of deeper organs of body. however, since bones near skin, multiple musculoskeletal applications of tomosynthesis have been studied, of have been used in research limited use in everyday practice.
evaluation of fractures
tomosynthesis has been compared both radiography , ct evaluation of healing fractures, in presence of hardware. in study of patients wrist fractures, digital tomosynthesis shown enable detection of more fractures radiography while simultaneously providing lower metal artifact radiography.
evaluation of erosions in rheumatoid arthritis
tomosythesis has been compared radiography, ct standard, detection of erosions associated rheumatoid arthritis. radiation dose of digital tomosynthesis close of radiography. however, tomosynthesis showed sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, , negative predictive value of 80%, 75%, 78%, 76%, , 80%, compared radiography 66%, 81%, 74%, 77%, , 71%. slight benefit digital tomosynthesis in application may or may not justify increased cost of modality compared radiography.
