the jesuits began construction of cathedral in 1748 on site of earlier church , completed in 1777, after king carlos iii expelled jesuits island in 1767.
legend has cathedral once held remains of christopher columbus. in 1796, after peace of basel signed , spain ceded of hispaniola france, remains of columbus moved , laid rest in cathedral s altar of gospel. gravestone read oh remains , image of great columbus, preserved 1 thousand years in funerary urn. remains returned spain in 1898 after cuban war of independence.
the cathedral renovated between 1946 , 1949. cuban architect cristobal martinez marquez headed project , through complex architectural procedures gave church interior more open , grandiose space, allowed more light enter, , improved ventilation system.
