beginning in 20th century, establishment of such national parks bryce canyon national park , zion national park, utah began become known natural beauty. southern utah became popular filming spot arid, rugged scenes, , such natural landmarks delicate arch , mittens of monument valley instantly recognizable national residents. during 1950s, 1960s, , 1970s, construction of interstate highway system, accessibility southern scenic areas made easier.


beginning in 1939, establishment of alta ski area, utah has become world-renowned skiing. dry, powdery snow of wasatch range considered of best skiing in world. salt lake city won bid 2002 winter olympics in 1995, , has served great boost economy. ski resorts have increased in popularity, , many of olympic venues scattered across wasatch front continue used sporting events. spurred development of light-rail system in salt lake valley, known trax, , re-construction of freeway system around city.


during late 20th century, state grew quickly. in 1970s, growth phenomenal in suburbs. sandy 1 of fastest-growing cities in country @ time, , west valley city state s 2nd populous city. today, many areas of utah seeing phenomenal growth. northern davis, southern , western salt lake, summit, eastern tooele, utah, wasatch, , washington counties growing quickly. transportation , urbanization major issues in politics development consumes agricultural land , wilderness areas.


in 2012, state of utah passed utah transfer of public lands act in attempt gain control on substantial portion of federal land in state federal government, based on language in utah enabling act of 1894. state not intend use force or assert control limiting access in attempt control disputed lands, intend use multi-step process of education, negotiation, legislation, , if necessary, litigation part of multi-year effort gain state or private control on lands after 2014.
