although battle of prague over, william, fiancé of young woman named lenore, has not returned 7 years war yet. ever since had gone battle in army of king frederick, lenore has been impatiently worrying william every day , longing return, has not heard news him. when other warriors return war without william, begins quarrel god, complaining unfairness , proclaiming has never done good, prompts mother ask daughter s forgiveness because knows such thought blasphemous , condemn hell. lenore s mother suggests william found woman in hungary, , lenore should forget him.


at midnight, mysterious stranger looks william knocks on door searching lenore , asks accompany him on horseback marriage bed. lenore happily gets on stranger s black steed , 2 ride @ frenetic pace, under moonlight, along path filled eerie landscapes. terrorised, lenore demands know why riding fast, responds doing because dead travel fast ( die todten reiten schnell ). lenore asks william leave dead alone ( laß sie ruhn, die todten ).


at sunrise, journey ends , arrive @ cemetery s doors. horse goes through tombstones, knight begins lose human appearance, , revealed death, skeleton scythe , hourglass. marriage bed shown grave where, shattered armour, william s skeleton lies. ground beneath lenore s feet begins crumble , spirits, dancing in moonlight, surround dying lenore, declaring no 1 quarrel god in heaven ( mit gott im himmel hadre nicht ). however, lenore, punished death, still has hope forgiveness ( des leibes bist du ledig/gott sei der seele gnädig ).
