from july august 2013, team of scientists , technicians both at-sea , on shore conduct exploratory investigations on diversity , distribution of deep-sea habitats , marine life along northeast u.s. canyons , @ mytilus seamount, located within u.s. exclusive economic zone. 36-day expedition composed of 2 cruise ‘legs.’the exploration area community-driven expedition identified based on discussions , information stemming may 2011 atlantic basin workshop , priority area input received other noaa programs , management community. using input, , data acquired during previous atlantic canyon undersea mapping expeditions (acumen project), noaa , broader science community have identified number of exciting targets explore during 2 cruise legs, commencing next steps in systematic exploration. in coming weeks, expect explore cold seeps, deep coral communities, undersea canyons, landslide features, , seamount.the expedition marks first time noaa’s new 6,000 meter remotely operated vehicle (rov), deep discoverer , seirios camera sled , lighting platform used in full telepresence-enabled ocean exploration noaa ship okeanos explorer. when these systems deployed ship, able provide scientists , audiences onshore real-time video footage deepwater areas in important, yet largely unknown, u.s. waters.
