as intense upper-level trough moved across interior united states, extremely warm air mass spread eastward ahead of storm, resulting in slight atmospheric instability in tennessee , ohio river valleys. warm air mass followed strong cold front, causing temperatures fall below freezing. increased instability in region, quasi-linear convective system (qlcs) formed , moved across area ahead of cold front, producing numerous tornadoes , wind-related damage. on two-day period january 29 january 30, 962 tornado, hail, , strong wind reports received storm prediction center (spc). of these, 83 were tornado-related reports. strongest of these tornadoes occurred on january 30 , affected areas of bartow , gordon counties in georgia. high-end ef3 killed 1 person in adairsville, ending record 220‑day streak without tornado-related fatality in united states, last death occurring due ef2 tornado associated tropical storm debby in florida in june 2012. 65 confirmed tornadoes third ever recorded occur in january. outbreak largest january-tornado outbreak in middle tennessee, confirmed 22 tornadoes.
