although won democratic candidates in every election since 1992, clear margins, in 2016 michigan considered swing state , received attention republican party candidate donald trump. trump able win state first time since george h. w. bush won in 1988, albeit narrow 0.23% margin of victory. on election day, in michigan, detroit free press had prematurely called state clinton @ 9:15pm before retracting call 3 hours later, error had been common in many networks in 2000 election, in states of florida , new mexico.
