entering 2013, oceanic niño index (oni) three-month period lasting november 2012 january 2013 based on sea surface temperature (sst) anomalies -0.3, denoting cooler normal ssts in areas of pacific. throughout mid-january in united states, there isolated tornado activity, centered in south. in late-january, unusually strong upper-level trough combined atmospheric instability produced widespread tornado outbreak on southern united states. strongest of these tornadoes ef3, first intense tornado confirmed in u.s. in 2013. in eastern australia, remnants of tropical cyclone oswald produced significant flooding in conjunction tornadoes in late january. small outbreak on february 10 spawned ef4 tornado affected hattiesburg, mississippi.


a period of inactivity followed weeks of year. both march , april had near-record low activity, attributed cold air persisting on of continental u.s., preventing significant severe weather occurring (and allowing late-season winter storms). however, pattern changed abruptly in mid-may significant outbreak struck towns in north-central texas, followed closely larger outbreak affected of midwestern , southern u.s., in oklahoma. on may 20, ef5 tornado struck moore, oklahoma. powerful outbreak struck midwest , ark-la-tex area in final week of may. outbreak produced widest tornado in recorded history, west of oklahoma city hit areas south , southeast of el reno on may 31, killing storm chaser tim samaras , 2 partners , injuring weather channel s mike bettes tornado hunt team.


june , july both below average tornadoes, , august , september near average tornadoes. october featured small outbreak of tornadoes on nebraska , iowa; however, 2 of tornadoes violent enough rated ef4. small outbreak weak tornadoes ended month, pushing october activity near average. after lull in activity during first half of november, large outbreak occurred on november 17, producing 73 tornadoes , killing 7 people. overall, november above average tornadoes. december below average tornadoes, 13, causing 2013 end record low tornado count adjustments made undercounting tornadoes in earlier years.
