Structure and analysis Sonata for Solo Violin (Bartók)



the tempo di ciaccona sonata-form movement written in style of chaconne, though not form. full of typical hungarian folk intervals , harmonies. fuga begins three-voice fugue on pulsating, staccato melody. after section melody accompanied quietly fast running notes, returns series of chords, alternately played bow , plucked. nevertheless, not strict fugue, every episode introduces new material subject. melodia begins lyrical melody, stated alone , in different registers of instrument. continues in sixths, octaves, , tenths, accompanied trills , tremolos. presto alternates between quiet, fast, bumblebee-like passage played mute, , cheerful melody. bartók wrote rapid passages in quarter-tones, many violinists choose perform version, suggested menuhin, uses standard 12 notes of western classical music. 3 contrasting themes appear throughout movement, of re-appear in final coda.


the solo sonata presents violinists many difficulties , uses full gamut of violin techniques: several notes played simultaneously (multiple stops), artificial harmonics, left-hand pizzicato executed simultaneously melody played bow, , wide leaps between pitches.
