the living seas

the living seas opened public on january 15, 1986. housed largest saltwater tank in world @ completion, holding 5.7 million gallons (22,000 m) of water, surpassed in 2005 opening of georgia aquarium. concept of building take visitors under ocean sea base alpha . guests viewed short movie formation of oceans entitled sea, followed elevator ride ocean floor aboard hydrolator (in reality, floor merely shook , effects in walls simulated downward motion). guests boarded seacab , traveled along underwater tunnel through aquarium @ caribbean coral reef ride. there, guests rode around sea base alpha , got up-close view of marine life. disembarked main exhibit area interact various multimedia displays.


the living seas sponsored united technologies opening until 1998. after departure of united technologies sponsor of living seas, significant changes made pavilion. sponsorship references removed pavilion. additionally, 1 of 2 preshow theaters removed , replaced walkway, allowing guests bypass preshow if wished go directly hydrolators.


in october 2001, seacabs closed down. queue of seacab ride left intact , seacabs still visible guests through ocean tank windows. reasons closure not entirely known. after closed, guests leaving hydrolators walked along corridor sea base alpha. now, guests had option of viewing preshow or going directly hydrolators , walking sea base alpha.


the seas nemo & friends

in december 2003, disney began re-theme living seas new pavilion based on released pixar film finding nemo. majority of transformation began exterior elements, in january 2004, interior began change well. on november 16, 2004, turtle talk crush opened in once module 1c, or earth systems exhibit. show s unexpected success overwhelmed pavilion, causing development of plans move turtle talk crush larger area in pavilion.


turtle talk crush beginning of changes living seas. on august 21, 2005, living seas closed transformation seas nemo & friends. parts of pavilion reopened in late november 2005. outside pavilion, facade , mural changed , depictions of sea life seen in finding nemo added. exit hydrolators had been removed, , replaced glass doors served exit , temporary entrance. sea base alpha had been re-themed finding nemo , entire original preshow area in process of being rebuilt. decor , signage replaced , scientific displays replaced ones themed finding nemo. turtle talk crush remained popular before transformation.


throughout 2006, construction walls hid preshow area undergoing reconstruction. former sea base alpha open, work progressed on new queue areas , seacabs being rebuilt new clamobile attraction. remaining living seas preshow theater, entrance hydrolators, holding areas, , seacabs queue removed , replaced new themed queue area took place of former hydrolator story. hydrolator 3 , theater 1 replaced number of new dark ride sets. former seacabs ride lengthened 280 feet (85 m), final section still took place inside tank. new projection technology added tank , new show scenes. existing seacabs given clamshell shape , renamed clamobiles . 3 audio-animatronic seagulls added entrance. periodically flap wings , mine! mine! mine! , seagulls in finding nemo.


on october 10, 2006, construction walls in front of entrance living seas, seas nemo & friends, removed. temporary entrance removed exit. corridor constructed extending module second preshow theater, had been unused since bypass corridor built guests choose skip preshow after united technologies discontinued sponsorship of living seas. seas nemo & friends rededicated on january 24, 2007.


it first epcot pavilion based on disney animated movie property , second epcot attraction (the lion king-based circle of life: environmental fable @ land pavilion first, opening in 1995 replacing symbiosis).
