boyle served in first world war staff officer on staff of rear-admiral rosslyn wemyss during dardanelles campaign. given command light cruiser hms fox in red sea in september 1915 , went on commander of red sea patrol in january 1916. in capacity led six-day bombardment of turkish held port of jeddah in june 1916 , worked closely t. e. lawrence in support of arab revolt. services egypt, awarded order of nile, 3rd class on 4 december 1916. went on flag captain admiral sir henry oliver, commanding 1st battlecruiser squadron in grand fleet, in battlecruiser hms repulse in november 1917. appointed companion of order of bath on 1 january 1918 and, services jordan, awarded order of el nahda, second class on 23 april 1920.
