rafael urdaneta born in maracaibo, captaincy general of venezuela prominent family of spanish descent on october 24, 1788. son of marriage between miguel geronimo de urdaneta y troconis , maria alejandrina faria. began elementary education in maracaibo, , secondary education in caracas. prior independence war student of latin , philosophy.


he married dolores vargas paris, young , renown heroine of city of santa fe, in santa fe, gran colombia, on august 31, 1822. before gran colombia dissolved in 1831, marriage had enjoyed popularity. however, following dissolution , establishment of dictatorship in republic of new granada, forced flee country. upon reaching maracaibo, venezuela (urdaneta s native city), suffered persecution general paez, had become 1 of bolivar s ideological adversaries after end of venezuelan war of independence. urdaneta , dolores supporters of bolivar s cause forced flee again, time curazao.


in 1832, able return caracas through license granted family government of venezuela, conditioned urdaneta not intervene in politics of country. family moved santa ana de coro, revolt erupted against government. opened doors urdaneta venture venezuelan politics once again. able retain position senator until 1845.
