british rail

the scotrail brand created british railways scottish region manager chris green in mid 1980s provide distinctive brand regional railways network in scotland. brand has developed , still in use today.


scotrail, under br, used customised versions of existing british rail liveries, passenger locomotives , coaching stock painted in lightly modified version of intercity executive livery. red stripe replaced saltire blue stripe, , intercity name replaced scotrail name. diesel locomotives carried standard intercity executive livery, scotrail branding. diesel , electric multiple units carried normal versions of regional railways livery. in spt area, rolling stock (dmu , emu) painted in strathclyde orange , black.


national express

the brand adopted national express when took on franchise british railways during privatisation in 1997. first unique scotrail livery introduced shortly after privatisation under national express, introduced own livery. initially, vehicles received new scotrail logo applied vinyl stickers; stylised outline of scotland composed of 3 flashes in corporate colours of green, red , purple. multiple units painted new livery bodies in white (lower half) , purple (upper half) green, red , white stripes bordering purple, overlain , wide diagonal white band in centre of carriage. there no units left regional railways livery in scotland @ end of national express franchise period, although class 305 electric units retained until withdrawal in 2001. latter replaced ex-stansted skytrain class 322 units never repainted under national express franchise, receiving scotrail logo transfers. when class 322 hire ended in 2004, replaced on north berwick branch english welsh & scottish class 90 electric locomotives hauling former virgin trains mk.3 coaching stock, in old virgin red , grey livery, again scotrail logo transfers.


firstgroup

when firstgroup became franchisee on 17 october 2004, in line other rail franchises held, brand revised first scotrail, having outbid national express.


when first acquired franchise, new regional livery of pink, grey , purple , new logo of pink circle , italicised f character introduced. legislation requiring train doors painted in contrasting colour body visually impaired passengers resulted in white doors pink stripe. national express, first applied logo on units transfer until repainting. large number of units re-branded livery, including class 322 units re-acquired (and refurbished) north berwick service , class 90 locomotives used on caledonian sleeper services.


transport scotland

in september 2008, scottish government agency, transport scotland, announced franchised scottish rail services permanently renamed scotrail. transport scotland came new livery applied of scotland s trains, when went maintenance. new livery dark blue background, grey doors , white dotted saltire scottish flag. new logo applied, scotrail, tag line scotland s railway . stations , staff uniforms getting new - dark blue. livery not going replaced when franchise ends, branding showing operator small scotrail operated sign on station building , on train doors. franchise transferred abellio scotrail on 1 april 2015.


caledonian sleeper

the caledonian sleeper rolling stock not treated transport scotland livery transferred separate franchise operated serco on 1 april 2015.
