us 48 signed along portion of current state route 55 (virginia sr 55) west of i-81. route begins @ west virginia state line @ highway s summit of great north mountain, signed 48 , wv 55 wardensville. entering virginia, 48 heads northeast two-lane wardensville pike through george washington national forest , descends mountain hamlet of star tannery, highway leaves frederick county crossing cedar creek. road s name changes john marshall highway, , passes around northern end of little north mountain near community of wheatfield, turning south. 48 passes through shenandoah county communities of lebanon church , clary on way diamond interchange i-81, serves 48 s eastern terminus.
