briggs returned political , law career after war. 1865 1868, served massachusetts auditor. establishment of district court of central berkshire in 1869, briggs appointed standing justice of court in recognition of law career , duty on court-martial boards during war. briggs resigned bench in 1873.


briggs died of heart disease on september 23, 1887.
