among 5 geographical divisions of tamil country in sangam literature, marutam region fit cultivation, had fertile lands. prosperity of farmer depended on getting necessary sunlight, seasonal rains , fertility of soil. among these elements of nature, sunlight considered indispensable ancient tamils, because if rains fail other methods of irrigation put use , if soil wasn t naturally fertile, artificial manuring enrich soil. differentiated lands on basis of fertility , accordingly cultivated crops best suited kind of soil. vanpulam (hardland), menpulam (fertile land), pinpulam (dry land) , kalarnilam or uvarnilam (salty land). vanpulam in mullai , kurinji regions did not yield rich produce, whereas in menpulam yield good. dry crops cultivated on pinpulam, because of limited irrigation facilities. kalarnilam unfit cultivation. of types of soil known people of age alluvial soil, red soil, black soil, laterite soil , sandy soil , knew crops grown on each type of soil.
