early life
gurdial singh born on 10 january 1933 in village of bhaini fateh near jaitu in british punjab. father, jagat singh, carpenter, , mother, nihal kaur, took care of household. young singh began working carpenter @ age of 12 support family s poor financial conditions. own admission, singh worked 16 hours day when took on various jobs such making wheels bullock carts , metal sheet forming water tanks. together, , father earned ₹20 (31¢ us) day hard labour.
in childhood, singh interested in painting gradually applied himself formal education. after persuading singh s father son worthy of more schooling, madan mohan sharma, headmaster of middle school singh attended in jaito, encouraged young boy stick studies, though father thought futile. singh completed matric examination while worked in various day time jobs. @ age of 14, married balwant kaur. in 1962, took job of school teacher in nandpur kotra paid him ₹60 (94¢ us) in monthly salary. meanwhile, singh continued own education, went on receive b.a. in english , history, , followed m.a. in 1967.
literary career
singh started literary career in 1957 short story, bhaganwale , published in panj darya, magazine edited mohan singh. later stories published in preetlari, edited gurbaksh singh. major work, marhi da deeva, established reputation novelist. singh wrote 4 different versions of novel on course of 4 years, before decided publish fourth , final 1 in 1964. various characters singh portrayed in novel recreations of real-life people woven fictitious storyline. translated english sahitya akademi last flicker.
singh s other notable works included novels anhoe (1966), addh chanani raat (1972), anhe ghore da daan (1976) , parsa (1991); collections of short stories, including saggi phull (1962), kutta te aadmi (1971), begana pind (1985) , kareer di dhingri (1991); , autobiographies neean mattiyan (1999) , dojee dehi (2000) published in 2 parts. novels addh chanani raat , parsa have been translated english night of half moon (published macmillan) , parsa national book trust, respectively.
singh s favourite works included leo tolstoy s anna karenina, irving stone s lust life, john steinback s grapes of wrath, phanishwar nath renu s maila anchal, prem chand s godaan , yashpal s divya.
awards , honours
singh received various awards on course of life, including sahitya akademi award in punjabi in 1975 novel adh chanani raat, soviet land nehru award in 1986, bhai veer singh fiction award in 1992, shiromani sahitkar award in 1992, jnanpith award in 1999 , padma shri in 1998. shared jnanpith award hindi language author nirmal verma.
death
singh suffered heart attack earlier in 2016 after partially paralysed. on 13 august 2016 fell unconscious @ home in jaitu , admitted private hospital @ bathinda kept on ventilator support. died on 16 august 2016, when taken off life support systems, after determined singh had shown no signs of recovery. survived wife, balwant kaur, son , 2 daughters.
