john harman son of millionaire martin coles harman, owner of lundy island, , followed father s interest in natural history.


harman 29 years old, , lance-corporal in 4th battalion, queen s own royal west kent regiment, british army during second world war when following deed took place posthumously awarded victoria cross.


on 8/9 april 1944 @ battle of kohima, british india, lance-corporal harman commanding section of forward platoon soldiers of imperial japanese army had established machine-gun post within 50 yards of company , becoming menace. since not possible bring fire on enemy post lance-corporal went forward himself , threw grenade position, destroying it. returned carrying enemy machinegun trophy. next morning, having ordered covering fire bren gun team, went out alone, lee–enfield , fixed bayonet , charged party of japanese soldiers digging in. shot 4 , bayoneted one. on way back, lance corporal harman severely wounded burst of enemy machine-gun fire , died after reaching british lines.


having been shot harman recovered nearest trench company commander, captain donald easten, , died in arms. plaque displayed on house born in shrewsbury road, beckenham, located in london borough of bromley. there memorial him erected father in vc quarry, on east side of lundy island.
