map of north island fault system showing wairarapa fault
the earthquake associated rupturing of approximately 150 km (93 mi) of wairarapa fault. horizontal displacement of 18 metres (59 ft) accompanied uplift , tilting of rimutaka range on northwestern side of fault vertical offsets of 6 metres near fault reducing nothing on western coast of wellington peninsula. estimated magnitude of 8.2 unusually large earthquake associated movement on strike-slip fault, , coseismic offset have been largest known such event. has been suggested caused rupture propagating down fault links through top of subducting pacific plate. geomorphological evidence, particularly uplifted beach ridges observed @ turakirae head, appears record 3 previous coseismic uplifts of rimutaka range caused earthquakes similar in magnitude 1855 event, recurrence interval of 2200 years.
