as result of incident, changes made sodium reactor experiment. tetralin eliminated, sodium system modified, wash-cell cleaning process used steam instead of water, instrumentation improved , fuel-element geometry modified. in september 1960, following recovery , cleanup operations, sodium reactor experiment began operation new reactor core. @ time of july 1959 incident, sodium reactor experiment had operated 10,344 hours. after repairs made , new core loaded, sodium reactor experiment operated additional 26,716 hours , generated total of 37 gwh of electricity.
