to perform ancestor rituals, family @ eldest son s house prepare many kinds of food such wine, taro soup, beef, fish, 3 different colored vegetables, many kinds of fruits, , rice cake or songpyon, particularly favored deceased. shinwi (신위, 神位) or memorial tablet, symbolizes spiritual presence of ancestor, placed @ center of table. in modern days, daughter or younger son of family may perform these rites.
after midnight or in evening before ancestor s death anniversary, descendants set shrine, paper screen facing north , food laid out on lacquer table follows: rice, meat, , white fruits on west, soup, fish, , red fruits on east, fruits on first row, meat , fish on second, vegetables on third, , cooked rice , soup on last. rice bowls , individual offerings male ancestors placed west, , of females east (고서비동, 考西妣東). 2 candles laid on both ends of table, , incense holder placed in middle. in front of shrine, set written prayer, if family not own memorial tablet (신위).
