remains of house leveled hattiesburg, mississippi tornado.

as large , powerful area of low pressure moved across northern plains, powerful severe thunderstorms developed across trailing cold front. these storms, located across louisiana , mississippi primarily, prompted many tornado warnings. shortly after 5:00 p.m. cst (2300 utc), large , extremely dangerous tornado confirmed southwest of hattiesburg, mississippi; wedge tornado, documented locals , storm chasers, moved through city after prompting tornado emergency surrounding locations. severe locally catastrophic damage reported in hattiesburg , nearby city of petal, leaving 82 people injured. tornado rated ef3, later upped ef4 on enhanced fujita scale. mississippi governor phil bryant issued state of emergency forrest, lamar, lawrence, , marion counties due impact of severe storms , tornadoes in counties.

february 18

in mid-february, strong extratropical system moved across united states near border canada. cold front extended towards southeastern united states, generating thunderstorm activity. spc issued slight risk zone areas of texas, arkansas, , louisiana 1300 utc on february 18, mentioning possibility of organized storm activity including bow echoes , supercells. strong wind shear , cold temperatures aloft contributed development of supercells noontime, produced large hail , tornadoes.

many, weak , brief, tornadoes touched down across extreme east-central texas (east of tyler). of these tornadoes traveled less 2 miles , caused minor tree damage. however, few structures sustained roof damage , large barn , small shed destroyed. further east, 1 tornado touched down in arkansas, southwest of garland. downed few trees , rated ef0. south, in louisiana, 3 ef0 tornadoes touched down across caddo , desoto parishes. these tornadoes brief , downed few trees. no deaths or injuries reported these tornadoes.

february 24 (australia)

several tornadoes struct new south wales coast during overnight period of february 23–24. 5 tornadoes investigated australian bureau of meteorology on south coast, initial analysis indicated ef1 struck kiama leaving damage path 4 km long, jamberoo hit ef0 trail of damage 8 km long, , gerroa nowra struck ef2 left damage path 16 km long , 200–300 metres wide @ greatest. tornado swept through town of kiama caused extensive damage around 75 homes in area. further north in sydney funnel cloud reported @ kirribilli after midnight accompanied winds 135 km/hr recorded @ sydney harbour. there major damage roof of sydney flying squadron, local westpac bank, , surrounding area. major damage occurred in chifley, malabar , moore park part of roof of fox studios removed.
