the location museum chosen because many fossils have been found in katsuyama , uses many fossils found in surrounding area. museum designed kisho kurokawa , completed in summer of 2000, centerpiece 2000 dinosaur expo hosted in nearby nagaoyama park.


it officially opened on july 14, 2000, area of approximately 30,000 m (320,000 sq ft), making 1 of largest museums in of japan. there no support beams within main display area of building, allowing wide open spaces display large dinosaurs.
