Closure Cambridge to Mildenhall railway

in 1961 formal closure proceedings initiated; members of transport users consultative committee travelled cambridge mildenhall special train, returned road. formal public hearing hardship conducted, approval given closure passenger trains, , last train ran on 16 june 1962.


a goods train service continued, running cambridge mildenhall via newmarket, , via quy; outside sugar beet season conveyed domestic coal , coke. hardly commercially viable in face of modern road competition, , final through goods service operated on 10 july 1964. private siding oil traffic remained @ barnwell junction, , branch fordham burwell retained, remainder closed entirely. burwell terminal expected handle traffic in connection corrugated fittings ltd, traffic disappointing, , burwell stub closed 19 april 1965.


the barnwell junction oil terminal later operated bp, , ceased used after first months of 1994, although track access remained in situ considerable time.


fordham station remained in use, served trains on ely newmarket line, extremely thin, , on days no passenger used station. fordham station closed passengers 13 september 1965.
