first ascent

the first recorded ascent of großer widderstein took place on 25 july 1669 (1664 according other sources) reverend bickel schröcken.


normal route

the normal route top begins @ hochtannberg pass , runs across meadow slopes heading towards widderstein hut. @ height of 2,000 m path forks off west leads in under 15 minutes rock massif of widderstein. here waymarked rock path (uiaa grade i) runs through rockfall endangered gully summit ridge , there eastwards summit cross. approach mountain path may made baad, austria in kleinwalsertal via hochalp pass or bödmen through gemstelbach valley, through obere gemstelalpe (1,694 m) via gemstel pass widderstein hut.


climbing

there several climbing routes on faces of widderstein. on north face grade iv+ route. conquered e. könig , r. schmierle in 1897. north pinnacle (nordpfeiler) classed grade iii/ iv (length of rope in lower section), east arête grade iv. southwest face southwest summit (iii-iv) first climbed in 1951 b. segger , f. hieber. first ascent of west face of south shoulder (v+) made in 1935 helmreich , hutter. south arête (ii-iii, 1 spot iv) first negotiated w. blenk in descent.
