on july 13, march organized protest smith s beatings , police brutality in city. during rally, unknown woman smashed windows of 4th precinct metal bar. looting began after , spread along springfield avenue, neighborhood s business district. molotov cocktails thrown shops , entire buildings caught fire/
next car burned , policeman injured flying brick after shotguns issued police. midnight looting occurring in wider area, police placed on emergency duty , fires being started. @ 1:00 a.m. police told fire if necessary. within 2 hours national guard , state troopers called out.
early in evening of july 15 woman named rebecca brown killed in fusillade of bullets directed @ window of second-floor apartment. event helped set off worst of fighting. sixth day, riots, looting, violence, , destruction left total of 16 civilians, 8 suspects, police officer, , firefighter dead; 353 civilians, 214 suspects, 67 police officers, 55 firefighters, , 38 military personnel injured; , 689 civilians , 811 suspects arrested. property damage exceeded $10 million.
in effort contain riots, every evening @ 6 p.m. bridge street , jackson street bridges, both of span passaic river between newark , harrison, closed until next morning.
the 1967 plainfield riots occurred during same period in plainfield, new jersey, city 18 miles southwest of newark.
