in 1920, imperial session of shriners held in portland, oregon. during session membership unanimously passed resolution establish @ time called shriners hospital crippled children system. first hospital in system opened in 1922 in shreveport, louisiana. provided pediatric orthopaedic care.


in 1962, shriners of north america allocated $10 million establish 3 hospitals specialized in treatment , rehabilitation of burned children. after visiting 21 university-based medical institutions, decision made build first pediatric burn hospital on campus of university of texas medical branch in galveston, texas.


in 1994, chronicle of philanthropy, industry publication, released results of largest study of charitable , non-profit organization popularity , credibility. study showed shriners hospitals ranked 9th popular charity/non-profit in america of on 100 charities researched 40% of americans on age of 12 choosing love , lot shriners hospitals.


in september 2008, shriner s hospital in galveston sustained significant damage hurricane ike. hospital closed renovation @ time, , care children acute burns provided @ other shriners hospitals children. shriners had considered closing facilities in shreveport, louisiana; greenville, south carolina; erie, pennsylvania; spokane, washington; springfield, massachusetts , galveston, texas, eliminating total of 225 beds. however, in july 2009, shriners national convention voted overwhelming against closing hospitals , repair , reopen galveston facility.


in 2009, despite endowment declined $8 billion $5 billion in less year because of poor economy, douglas maxwell, hospitals ceo said , other shriners confident hospital system able remain solvent in long term. maxwell stated in july 2009 of facilities may become outpatient surgical centers, , begin accepting insurance payments (for care) first time in hospitals 87-year history. maxwell said children suffering burns, orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries , cleft palates continue treated without charge families.


in may 2015, shriners hospitals children became member of mayo clinic care network, national network of organizations committed better serving patients , families through physician collaboration.
