this style of housing developed when local developers adapted western-style terrace houses chinese conditions. migrant labourers surrounding provinces entered shanghai in large numbers establishment of shanghai treaty port in 1843. 1853 small swords rebellion , taiping revolution drove more migrants , refugees shanghai. upsurge in demand, property developers began build large number of residential buildings new chinese residents of city. @ first, these tended wooden buildings cheap , quick build. these wooden buildings built terraces, , name li (里) suffix. these first lilong buildings in shanghai. within 10 months 1853, 800 dwellings of type built.
