ancient parish

gisburn centre of large ancient parish, included townships of gisburn forest, paythorne, newsholme, horton, rimington, middop, nappa , swinden. these townships became separate civil parishes in 1866, , except 2 became part of bowland rural district when formed in 1894. gisburn , other parishes of bowland rural district transferred yorkshire lancashire in 1974. nappa , swinden became part of settle rural district in 1894, , remained in yorkshire in 1974 part of new county of north yorkshire.


non-conformism in gisburn

in 1759 gisburn established first place of methodist worship in district. on 18 april 1784 john wesley, aged 81, preached large congregation. original methodist chapel on mill lane later became part of village smithy. new chapel built in 1871 closed in 1948 due falling attendance. building used garage , site of 3 houses known old chapel .


in nearby horton-in-craven congregational chapel founded in 1670. @ paythorne there wesleyan chapel built in 1830 , in rimington there congregational chapel dated 1817.
