off-peak discount passes

ns defines off-peak hours weekdays 00:00-06:30, 09:00-16:00 , 18:30-24:00 , on saturdays , sundays whole day. discount product on pass 1 automatically granted discount based on type of discount product , time of checking in. term discount includes 100 percent discount, i.e. free travel.


there off-peak discount pass (in dutch: dal voordeel (nl)) €29 per year, allowing 40 percent discount on journeys starting in off-peak hours. in case of group of 4 people, discount if 1 has pass. card replaced old off peak discount pass (in dutch: voordeelurenabonnement, can still renewed otherwise no longer available). these advantages of dal voordeel compared voordeelurenabonnement:

these disadvantages:



no discount in busy afternoon rush hour (6:30-9:00 , 16:00-18:30)

no discount on ns-24 hours card (from 09:00 valid)

travellers aged 60 years , older can buy supplement €14 free travel during off-peak hours on 7 days of choice (with limitations) during year. not possible buy multiple supplements same year.


there off-peak free pass (in dutch: dal vrij (nl)) €1188 per year, allowing free journeys, start in off-peak hours (compare ov-jaarabonnement).


for €318 per month, travelers can buy unlimited travel pass valid, during peak hours. card, checking in , out required, or traveller risks fine. regulations involving time periods (for ns, may different other operators):



5 minutes: margin traveller applied times of start , end of off-peak hours, compared published
30 minutes: maximum allowed time between checking in , scheduled departure time of train
1 hour: maximum allowed time between checking in , out @ same station without travelling, free of charge
