the episodes recorded in front of live audience in pinewood studios, iver, buckinghamshire, except set used large, filmed, , played out invited audience as-live . also, show, unlike british sitcoms in common american television comedies, has no location footage. scenes taking place outdoors sets.

opening sequence

at start of first 2 series, slides across 4 boxes each character s face in them. first box stands alone ben , susan in it. other 3 lapped on each other photo of michael, janey , nick left right in them. while slides across @ start, each character s face turns janey , nick smiling , others being plain faced. once boxes placed, boxes youngsters in them drop bottom of screen , replaced show s logo.

at start of third series, 4 rectangle blocks fall onto white screen create ben s face. blocks replaced blocks create susan s face; each block shows different parts of other characters reveal nick s face. continues janey, michael , (starting fourth episode entitled of mice , ben ) new character show abi. abi s (for first 3 episodes, michael s) face falls bottom right corner while previous faces spread across other places of white screen. reveals nick, janey , michael next abi , ben , susan each other @ top left of screen. logo fades on top right of screen.

the fourth series similar third series opening sequence. difference photo of each character changed, each block not show different parts of each character when transitions; instead transitions in various styles, example in opening in window blind style. series 5 titles still remain similar; photos changed again , there eleven rectangles instead of four. nick absent opening titles in series 5 except in episode 6 of series 5 titled done ; missing in episodes series 4 , few series three.

the series 6 opening titles have cut-outs of each character, fade white screen , zoom in , out , stop moving. line-up left right abi, michael, susan, ben, janey , roger. titles remain same series 7 , eight; 1 difference janey s clothes changed. in series nine, line-up changes due abi s departure @ end of previous series. place taken alfie, has been regular since series 6 never appeared in titles until ninth series. starting in 2009 christmas special, alfie has been replaced kenzo.
