advaita vedanta not philosophical system, tradition of renunciation. philosophy , renunciation closely related:
most of notable authors in advaita tradition members of sannyasa tradition, , both sides of tradition share same values, attitudes , metaphysics.
shankara organized monks under 10 names , established mathas them. these mathas contributed influence of shankara, due institutional factors . mathas built exist until today, , preserve teachings , influence of shankara, while writings of other scholars before him came forgotten passage of time .
shri gaudapadacharya math
around 740 ce, gaudapada founded shri gaudapadacharya math, known kavaḷē maṭha. located in kavale, ponda, goa, , oldest matha of south indian saraswat brahmins.
shankara s monastic tradition
shankara, himself considered incarnation of shiva, established dashanami sampradaya, organizing section of ekadandi monks under umbrella grouping of ten names. several hindu monastic , ekadandi traditions, however, remained outside organisation of dasanāmis.
sankara organised hindu monks of these ten sects or names under 4 maṭhas (sanskrit: मठ) (monasteries), called amnaya mathas, headquarters @ dvārakā in west, jagannatha puri in east, sringeri in south , badrikashrama in north. each math first headed 1 of 4 main disciples, , tradition continues since then. according tradition in kerala, after sankara s samadhi @ vadakkunnathan temple, disciples founded 4 mathas in thrissur, namely naduvil madhom, thekke madhom, idayil madhom , vadakke madhom.

monks of these ten orders differ in part in beliefs , practices, , section of them not considered restricted specific changes made shankara. while dasanāmis associated sankara maths follow procedures enumerated adi Śankara, of these orders remained partly or independent in belief , practices; , outside official control of sankara maths. advaita sampradaya not saiva sect, despite historical links shaivism. nevertheless, contemporary sankaracaryas have more influence among saiva communities among vaisnava communities.
