during 1870s , 1880s, federal laws passed , federal marshals assigned enforce laws against polygamy. in 1890 manifesto, lds church leadership dropped approval of polygamy citing divine revelation. when utah applied statehood again in 1895, accepted. statehood officially granted on january 4, 1896.
