in 1991, electronics company philips entered console gaming business creating compact disc interactive console, better known cd-i. 3do, cd-i marketed not video game console, multimedia console. besides cd-i discs, console capable of playing video cds. launch price $700. intended add-on super nes, deal fell through. nintendo, however, did give philips rights , permission use 5 nintendo characters cd-i games. in 1993, philips released 2 zelda games, link: faces of evil , zelda: wand of gamelon. year later, philips released zelda game, zelda s adventure, , few months later, mario game titled hotel mario. 4 of these nintendo-themed games commonly cited critics being among worst ever made. criticism aimed @ cd-i s controller. although extensively marketed philips, consumer interest remained low. sales began slow 1994, , in 1998, philips announced product had been discontinued. in all, 570,000 units sold, 133 games released.
