Flight test Kettering Bug






the prototype bug completed , delivered aviation section of u.s. army signal corps in 1918, near end of world war i. first flight on october 2, 1918 failure: plane climbed steeply after takeoff, stalled , crashed. subsequent flights successful, , aircraft demonstrated army personnel @ dayton.


kettering bug had 2 successes on 6 attempts @ dayton, 1 of 4 @ amityville, , 4 of 14 @ carlstrom.


despite successes during initial testing, bug never used in combat. officials worried reliability when carrying explosives on allied troops. time war ended 45 bugs had been produced. aircraft , technology remained secret until world war ii.


during 1920s, had become u.s. army air service continued experiment aircraft until funding withdrawn.


from april 1917 march 1920 government spent $275,000 on kettering bug.
