after horrendous t20 world cup 2016 campaign, t20i captain shahid afridi sacked , pcb appointed sarfraz captain of national t20 team on 5 april 2016. won first match in t20i against england 9 wickets. later team defeated 2016 icc world twenty20 champions, west indies whitewash in 3 match series. first time pakistan has completed whitewash in 3 match t20i series. second captain win 6 consecutive t20i matches after misbah-ul-haq. , 2nd ever captain win first 6 matches captain.under captaincy, pakistan won famous world xi series 2–1.

on 9 february 2017 following resignation of captain azhar ali odi captaincy, sarfraz ahmed chosen succeed him making him full time limited overs captain of pakistan. made vice-captain pakistan test team. in first series odi captain, pakistan beat west indies 2–1


his first major tournament captain 2017 icc champions trophy. in pool matches, pakistan lost india, went on win against south africa , sri lanka enter semi-finals. in semi-final, pakistan beat hosts england comprehensively enter pakistan s first champions trophy final. in final against arch-rivals india, pakistan posted massive total of 338 , won match convincingly become champions.

on 28 september 2017, against sri lanka, became 32nd captain of pakistan in tests.sri lanka won test series 2–0. pakistan s first whitewash in united arab emirates, , second whitewash in home series, after losing 3–0 australia in october 2002.
