structure
the temporal bone consists of 4 parts— squamous, mastoid, petrous , tympanic parts. squamous part largest , superiortly positioned relative rest of bone. zygomatic process long, arched process projecting lower region of squamous part , articulates zygomatic bone. posteroinferior squamous mastoid part. fused squamous , mastoid parts , between sphenoid , occipital bones lies petrous part, shaped pyramid. tympanic part relatively small , lies inferior squamous part, anterior mastoid part, , superior styloid process. styloid, greek stylos, phallic shaped pillar directed inferiorly , anteromedially between parotid gland , internal jugular vein. elongated or deviated styloid process can result calcification of stylohyoid ligament in condition known eagle syndrome.

the temporal bone ossified 8 centers, exclusive of internal ear , tympanic ossicles: 1 squama including zygomatic process, 1 tympanic part, 4 petrous , mastoid parts, , 2 styloid process. before end of prenatal development [fig. 6] temporal bone consists of 3 principal parts:
