in 1940s, i-691 routing part of planned 6a expressway southington willimantic. section of expressway (from middlefield terminus west exit 8) first opened in 1966. 1968, 6a designation dropped in favor of route 66. highway extended west exit 4 1971. connection i-84 completed in 1987, renumbering i-691 done @ same time. portion east of i-91 remained route 66. environmental , community groups blocked attempts extend freeway east of present terminus due potential impacts on mt. higby reservoir, provides drinking water local area. compromise reached in late 1990s allowing conndot convert route 66 2-lane road 4 lanes eastern end of i-691 freeway business district in middletown. construction on route 66 widening project completed in 2005.
