dedication

it contained shrines of ammar ibn yasir , uwais qarni, died in battle of siffin in 657, took place around 40 km west of raqqa. adjacent bab al-baghdad, major landmark in city.


construction

the original tombs located in old cemetery @ edge of city. in 1988, syrian president hafez al assad , supreme leader of shi ite-majority iran, ayatollah khomeini, initiated project develop new mosque around tombs. work completed in 2003 , commemorative plaque credited president bashar al assad , iranian president mohammad khatami completing project.


destruction

as of june 2013, rebel fighters sunni group al-muntasereen billah living in mosque complex. on march 26, 2014, mosque blown 2 powerful explosions , destroyed islamic state in iraq , levant because shi ite structure. more specifically, built on graves , served shrine.
