History Cypress, California







the first people living in area known cypress gabrieleno, native american tribe of tongva people, displaced after arrival of europeans. government of spain possessed land until mexico gained independence in 1821. mexico lost alta california united states during period following bear flag revolt , mexican-american war.


the original spanish dons held immense tracts of land throughout california, given in lieu of pay spanish soldiers. manuel nieto 1 of spanish dons or landowners in area. after death in 1804, sons retained title rancho los nietos, these lands broken , distributed among them in 1833 grant mexican governor, josé figueroa. manuel s son, juan josé nieto, retained title large portion of father s original properties in southern california included present-day area of cypress. land , other rancho properties sold american abel stearns, acquired robinson trust, group of investors, parlayed holdings vast land speculation business.


cypress nicknamed waterville due preponderance of artesian wells in area, incorporated under name dairy city in 1956 local dairy farmers means of staving off developers , preserve dairies, then-neighboring cities of dairy valley in cerritos , dairyland in la palma. after world war ii, however, land became valuable farming or ranching, , dairies gradually sold out housing developers during 1960s, 1970s no dairies remained. many of dairymen moved operations chino, development once again pushing them out of area.


in 1957 local residents voted change name of dairy city cypress . name taken cypress elementary school (originally built in 1895) took name cypress trees planted protect schoolhouse seasonal santa ana winds. cypress elementary school provided name new pacific electric railway station on walker street @ lincoln avenue when santa ana line completed in 1906, waterville had been used elsewhere in system.


in 1981 city of cypress inaugurated annual birthday celebration city. event, cypress community festival, may largest single-day event of kind in orange county, california. cypress community festival held annually on 4th saturday in july @ oak knoll park, located adjacent cypress community center @ 5700 orange avenue, between valley view street , walker avenue.
