history
formation , releases (1995–1998)

cave in formed jay frechette , stephen brodsky in 1995. named cave-in homage codeine song, cave-in, album frigid stars. initial line-up consisted of frechette on vocals, brodsky on guitar , vocals, adam mcgrath on second guitar, jr conners on drums , justin matthes on bass. release demo , handful of split 7 releases bands such gambit, piebald , grace, , see matthes briefly replaced andy kyte. 1997 saw cave in s first release; self-titled 7 on aaron turner s hydra head records. following release, band embarked on three-week east coast tour. tour was, however, cut week short due jay frechette s prior obligations join , tour boston-based ten yard fight. after frechette returned month on tour ten yard fight mutual decision him leave cave in , join ten yard fight full-time. @ point, dave scrod stepped in short-lived tenure interim vocalist. in 1998, tracks previous 7 releases , recordings compiled form beyond hypothermia.


until heart stops , jupiter (1998–2002)

two weeks before band record first proper full-length, scrod left band, pushing guitarist steven brodsky position vocalist, , caleb scofield filled in then-vacant position on bass. debut studio album, 1998 s until heart stops, featured brodsky lead vocalist. album s release followed extensive touring.


before next full-length, cave in began experimenting sound offering creative eclipses, five-song ep indicated space rock direction band pursue several years, opposed metal roots. then, in 2000, released jupiter, receiving deal of press. band featured in spin magazine s sound advice section, new sound described emo-metal radiohead , though band rejected categorization. jupiter caught attention of major labels, began courting band after release. band released final six-song ep hydra head titled tides of tomorrow, further-expanded melodic approach, before moving on rca records.


rca records , antenna (2003–2004)

in 2003, band released antenna, debut rca. antenna had more success previous albums , cave in chosen play second stage on 2003 lollapalooza tour. after lollapalooza, cave in toured europe in support of foo fighters , muse. shortly after, band began revisit metal roots during concerts, , new heavy material led mutual agreement cut ties rca records shortly after.


perfect pitch black , hiatus (2005–2006)

cave in returned hydra head records , released perfect pitch black on september 13, 2005.


following release of perfect pitch black, conners departed band, due injury , temporarily relocating germany, , replaced converge drummer ben koller. according postings on hydra head records website news, adam mcgrath temporarily listed ex-cave in guitarist in new band clouds.


in november, 2006, cave in announced officially on hiatus.


reformation, planets of old , white silence (2009–present)

in april 2009, cave in publicly announced had ended more 3 year hiatus. band recorded new four-song ep, planets of old, exclusive vinyl hydra head records, , first made available @ reunion show on july 19, 2009 @ great scott s in allston, massachusetts. ep later released on cd in january 2010 bonus dvd of cave in s reunion show. 2 songs ep, retina sees rewind , cayman tongue , released through itunes. cave in chose make planets of old short ep instead of full-length because less expensive , faster record , release. commenting on duration of recording, steve brodsky stated, didn t wanna make big deal out of it. in past, ve had more couple instances of spending far long making recording. [...] exercise give ourselves strict amount of time record , move on.


looking forward, brodsky announced in january 2010 interview cave in more selective touring schedule, , future releases band might more focused on digital medium. brodsky uploaded live audio recording of new song titled centered in july 2010 on youtube. song comes cave in s recording sessions upcoming studio album, , first since 2005 s perfect pitch black. aforementioned album, entitled white silence, released on may 24, 2011 through hydra head records.


shortly after tours in support of white silence, cave in entered undeclared-hiatus state of band members shifted focus on other respective projects. on december 7, 2014, cave in performed live first time in 3 years, opening doomriders tenth anniversary show.
