vlbi has traditionally operated recording signal @ each telescope on magnetic tapes or disks, , shipping correlation center replay. recently, has become possible connect vlbi radio telescopes in close real-time, while still employing local time references of vlbi technique, in technique known e-vlbi. in europe, 6 radio telescopes of european vlbi network (evn) connected gigabit per second links via national research networks , pan-european research network geant2, , first astronomical experiments using new technique conducted in 2011.


the image right shows first science produced european vlbi network using e-vlbi. data 6 telescopes processed in real time @ european data processing centre @ jive. netherlands academic research network surfnet provides 6 x 1 gbit/s connectivity between jive , geant2 network.
